It will be a prescription drug which needs to be administrated by a nurse, for someone who has one of the medical conditions to use it.

What will probably happen is that melanotan-1 will go through trials for the 5 indications that Clinuvel is targeting and it will be found that for individuals suffering from 2 or 3 of these indications there will be genuine benefit from implant usage. So for 10 years or so this population of individuals will use melanotan-1 and how the drug affects them over this time will be tracked. If no adverse events/long term side effects are reported in that time then it is likely that Clinuvel (or whichever company holds the rights to melanotan-1 at that time) will do further clinical trials in UV damage susceptible fair skinned individuals in an attempt to have melanotan-1 approved for usage in this population as a skin cancer preventative.

This would be the worst case scenario concering the prescription of afamelanotide [melanotan-1]. It is such a horror scenario for all of us.
I can't wait 10 years!I only can say: Where there's a will there's a way..

Don't give up , if the doctor doesn't give u a prescription of afamelanotide [melanotan-1], just go to another doctors!Talk to them about your psychic problems concerning your fair skin and your fears concering getting skin-caner!

Well the only aspect of the story that counters what I am postulating here is that once melanotan-1 is approved for human usage as an orphan drug in the U.S. , Clinuvel will only have seven year exclusivity on its sale for human usage. Remember the patents for the drug itself have already expired. So this seven year exclusivity may spur them on in terms of the schedule of expansion of the indications for usage of melanotan-1. The only thing that is going to make development of the drug interesting for any given company is if other companies are prevented from entering the market. I think Clinuvel holds patents for the drug in easily viable delivery forms that would allow it to operate comfortably on this 10 year schedule though.

after reading some of the drug trial accounts, I am a little worried about the implant method. yes the implant is the size of a grain of rice, but I cant think of anyone who would want mulitple incisions to continue a tan for months on end. If there is an injectable implant that would be a diffrent ball game. But from what I have read, a small incision and a stich is required for a 60 day dose. that leaves a scar... that is understandable for people with chronic conditions but the off label use would be greatly compromised from this unsightly scar.

am I wrong? is there a method that doesnt include an incision and a stich for implantantion? obviously the make-your-own mix-and stick at home method will not be FDA appoved so is this all we have??

This incision technique was only performed in some individuals in the initial trials. If we watch the Epitan video on Google we can see that the device used to administer the implant is essentially a slightly larger syringe (we don't see the tip of the device but it is the same). Also on this video we see Elizabeth Minder administering an implant (a bit brutally) that does not involve any slicing/cutting.

Seriously, my scar is almost invisible, it's about this long ___ down on the right hand side of my lower abdomen. I could only see it just now by stretching the skin, it's a tiny pale line. The procedure was painless except for the injection, the doctor used (unneccesarily I thought) an 18 gauge intramuscular needle for the anaesthetic when a 27 or 25 gauge insulin needle would've been adequate. Maybe they can implant it in the same place when it's time for another one so you'd only ever have one scar. Anyway, scars are cool. Makes your body look lived in.

Hi Scott--

It is really puzzling (and disappointing) to me that you seem to think that prescription melanotan-1 will be out of reach to healthy fair-skinned people once it is approved for specific medical conditions. As I've written elsewhere on this forum, there will undoubtedly be physicians who are willing to prescribe it off-label and to make a little extra money in the process. Your silence on this topic suggests to me that you are expecting (and perhaps even hoping?) that such doctors will not exist, which to me is counter-intuitive.

Care to explain?

And they all said that they would prescribe it There are approved medicines on the market, which have more side effects than afamelanotide [melanotan-1].

yeah, the porn industry. That's a good argument! afamelanotide [melanotan-1] would also play an important role in this sector. Who wants to see fair-skinned girls in porns?!It is such an ugly look! Girls with a golden-brown tan are more demand!

yeah you are right, drew!
afamelanotide [melanotan-1] will be obtainable for everyone who demands for it!Especially if u hold a private insurance you will be treated as a king!
There will be an ecomomic addiction between the patient and the doctor. Nowadays where health systems are sick, no doctors can afford to tell afamelanotide [melanotan-1]-junkies that they should take a sun-blocker instead of the implant.

Remember on Botox or Viagra. They were developed for medical disorders, and today they are used for the cosmetic/lifestyle market.
This will also happen to afamelanotide [melanotan-1]!
