Site offline, outgrowing our britches!

Well folks first an apology to our regular (and not-so regular) users. The forum caused a serious server strain today for my provider and they had to take it offline temporarily. I have reconfigured the forum software to prevent this from happening again (by limiting a number of both front end and back end features). With the forum membership growing this is likely only going to be a temporary fix. What that means is that the forum will need to be hosted on a more robust (ie: more expensive) server configuration. As a result the forum will likely need to start asking for donations to keep everything properly funded and running smoothly. If anyone has suggestions for hosting providers or forum software that runs a bit more efficiently please don't hesitate to drop a note here or in a p.m. to myself. Thanks!

Once again our apologies for this bump in the road.

Sincerely,

-Scott

Scott,
I noticed in the last few weeks that clicking between posts was very slow, I thought it might be my PC, but today it's working fast again. I also thought it might be all the new catagories you added and a whole German section. Would all these new additions be overloading the server or is it just the number of people online?
Thanks

Socalguy,

I believe this is stemming primarily from the growth of the base of active forum users. I've curtailed the breadth of some features (ie: search) which has gotten things back to a snappy state but such a fix isn't very reasonable, ideally the forum's functionalities should be improving over time... not the opposite.

Scott,

I believe that the majority of the slow down is from spiders and crawlers.  I don't know this software so well but I know in other forum software they usually have controls to set times that they can crawl on the site.  Look for what is then timing for most of the traffic to the site, by actual people, and then only open up for the bots off of that time slot.  That way you can still have the browser hits but not slowing you down when most people are online.
If that still doesn't help, I would be willing to host melanotan.org for you, concider it my contribution.  It is the least I can do for the site that brought me and melanotan II together.
